The so-called "food allergy" is caused by an abnormal immune response when food enters the body. We shall never underestimate the lethality of "food allergy". It causes skin itching in mild cases but can lead to "anaphylactic shock" in severe cases, causing breathing difficulties, unconsciousness, even death
Is "food allergy" that scary? In 2016, Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, a 15-year-old British girl, ate a sandwich that was not labelled with using sesame as one of the ingredients. Being allergic to sesame, soon after eating, she experienced difficulties in breathing and died within hours. This incident has greatly garnered the attention of the public. In fact, according to the website of the Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the Department of Paediatrics, from Chinese University of Hong Kong, about 1-3% of adults and 4-6% of children worldwide suffer from food allergies. The latest research data also indicates that the prevalence of food allergies is on the rise.
Take the peanut allergy case for instance. The number of peanut allergy cases in the UK has increased fivefold in between 1995 and 2016. King's CollegeLondon did research on 3-year-old children and found that 2.5% of 1,300 testers had an allergic reaction to peanuts. In Australia, it is also found out that 9% of 1-year-old children are sensitive to eggs.
Which are the more common food allergens in Hong Kong? There are eight types: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean seafood, peanuts, tree nuts, soybeans, and wheat (gluten). Among them, crustacean seafood is the most common food allergen in Asia.
However, there is currently no cure for food allergies. To reduce the occurrence of food allergies, in addition to knowing the history of allergic reactions in the family, it is recommended to do a skin prick test.
Faber, a first-generation IgE allergy test, can detect the cause of "food allergy", to help patients avoid eating foods or products containing related allergens in the future. However, not every restaurant has listed what products or ingredients are used. Therefore, if you encounter a food allergy emergency when eating out, you should seek medical attention immediately or use an "allergy first aid pen" (epinephrine auto-injector) as directed by your doctor.
