Sleep Deprivation and Behavioural Problems in Children? Here’s why it happens.

As the proverb goes, "You dont shed your tears unless you’re sad." However, when a child is laughing and playing, he/she often suddenly rubs his/her eyes for no reason, causing red and swollen eyes, and eventually shedding tears. Or when spring approaches, he/she blinks frequently, occasionally rubs his/her eyes and tears too.. Even when eye drops are used to relieve the discomfort, it still fails to cure the problem.

With all the above mentioned situations, have any parents witnessed what is actually happening to their children or even themselves? In fact, children with itchy eyes, increased eye secretions, swollen, watery and red eyes may not only have problems with the anatomical structure of the eyes, in fact they may have "eye allergies”. The scientific term is referred to as "Allergic Conjunctivitis". That is, when the eyes are stimulated by allergens, the mast cells in the immune system will react and release a large amount of histamine, causing inflammation, congestion, redness and watering of the eyes. Often when children encounter this situation, they will blink and rub their eyes vigorously, and parents can easily notice it.

The primary types of eye allergies are seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis. Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is an allergic reaction triggered by substances like pollen or mould spores. Patients experience symptoms in spring, summer or fall, depending on the type of plant pollen in the air. On the other hand, perennial allergic conjunctivitis generally occurs as a result of exposure to allergens like house dust mite, dust and animal hair.

At present, about 20% to 30% of children in the world suffer from eye allergies. Although the symptoms are relatively mild, parents should not take it lightly because children who suffer from these conditions for a long period of time will have their sleep quality and moods affected, thereby reducing concentration level and hindering learning progress. Severe cases are more likely to cause corneal damage and even vision damage.

Ruling out virus or eye anatomy issues, how would the parents discover the main cause of eye allergies in children? The answer is very straightforward. Since eye allergy is caused by the irritation of the eyes due to allergens, we should start from the basic method and perform the latest generation of IgE allergy tests. Only 2 ml of blood is needed to be drawn to detect more than 295 allergen molecules. The sample will then be sent to Italy for testing. This will let the parents know in detail what allergens may be the cause of their children's eye allergy? Animal hair? dust? dust mite? Animal dander? Or other substances such as perfume?

Faber allergy test employs nanotechnology and the latest generation multiplex assay, such that it can accurately measure total IgE level up to 45,000 IU/ml in blood serum, reducing false positive test results, hence, making the test safe and accurate. If blood test is not preferred, you can also perform skin prick test, which can be performed for children as young as six months old or above. It can detect 18 common foods and allergens such as dust mites in the span of 30 minutes.

When the allergens related to eye allergies are identified, apart from consulting doctors for clinical diagnosis, parents can make feasible arrangements starting from their daily life routine, such as frequent house cleaning and contact allergen avoidance, these will all help in relieving the symptoms. If the child is sensitive to a certain pollen, parents should be aware to avoid contact with their child after coming back from abroad or certain places, as specific pollen will appear more in some places, to avoid aggravating the child's illness.
