The skin patch test is an allergy test for contact skin sensitivity and can test for allergic reactions caused by T cells. T cells release factors, which do not induce sensitivity by releasing histamine, and require exposure to allergens for a period of time before allergic reactions can occur. Knowing what allergens cause allergic reactions through skin patch testing can help patients stay away from contact allergens, thereby reducing contact dermatitis.

The test items are designed with reference to the journal published by the Hong Kong Society of Allergy Medicine in October 2019. For details, please click here.

Skin Patch Test Procedure

  1. Stick the Waterproof patches on your back. Every patch contains 10 different allergens
  2. Leave the skin in direct contact with the patches for a minimum of 48 hours
  3. You can continue with your daily activities and bathing. However, you should avoid rubbing and activities that can cause heavy sweating
  4. After 48 hours, remove the sticker
  5. Follow-up consultation in 2-3 days to discuss the test results

One study reported a sensitization rate of 24.5% in 85 North American children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. In another study, 15.2% of 1146 Danish adolescents had one or more positive patch test reactions.
