Avoid dust mite allergens starting from your home
One out of every six people in Hong Kong suffers from eye allergy, especially among children. Dust mites prevention starts from your home! Eye allergy symptoms include itchy eyes, red eyes, watery eyes, foreign body sensation, etc. If you already have other allergies, such as asthma, nasal allergy, eczema, etc; the chance of contracting eye allergy is even higher. Using dust mite covers to reduce exposure to dust mite allergens can effectively relieve eye allergy symptoms.
In accordance to a 2015-2017 study conducted by the The Department of Ophthalmology Visual Sciences (CUHK DOVS) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, from 3,000 Hong Kong school children that are aged 6 to 8, 43% of the children suffered from eye allergies, among which 90% had itchy eyes, 54% had red eyes, and more than 51% percent have watery eyes, with male as dominant gender. The Ophthalmology department from the University of Hong Kong interviewed 1,000 parents who have children under the age of 12. 67% of the interviewed parents said that their children had allergies, of which 23% had eye allergies, which means one in six children suffers from eye allergy.
When the immune system comes into contact with allergens, it induces an inflammatory response, produces immunoglobulins and antibodies, and forms blood vessels that dilate and leak more easily. In addition to consulting a doctor, you can also start from your daily life routine and take practical and feasible actions to reduce the health complications brought by dust mites.
Since dust mites cannot be detected by naked eyes, and they tend to linger on surfaces, we should eradicate the problem starting from daily stuff such as pillows and mattresses. Using dust mite covers is an effective way to reduce exposure to dust mite allergens. Dust mite cover is an effective method to reduce patients’ exposure to allergens.Household dust mites mainly live in places such as mattresses, pillows, sheets, carpets, plush dolls and sofas, hence, using microfiber dust mite covers can help to reduce the exposure of patients to dust mites. The dust mite allergen (dust mite faeces) has a volume diameter of approx. 7 µm (0.007 mm). In other words, the pinhole diameter of the material selected by MITE PROTEX is 5 µm (micron), which can effectively block dust mite allergens.
Another thing to note here is that not all dust mite covers are effective. It is always recommended to
purchase anti-mite products that are clinically and scientifically proven. Dust mite beddings are
expected to be cleaned once every 4 weeks.
If you find that your children often rub their eyes, or if their eyes might appear red and watery, it is highly likely that they are suffering from eye allergies. It is advisable to consult the doctor as soon as possible as well as using dust mite covers to reduce exposure to dust mite allergens!
